John White

It is with a sad heart that Nutmeg R/C Flyers announces the passing of one of its founding members, John White. The field we all enjoy today is a result of the work John and others did many years ago. John will surely be missed by many. The following is from his obituary...

John E. White,92, lifelong resident of Plymouth died Tuesday at home. Mr. White who was born Nov. 25,1918,son of the late, Irving and Katherine (Everden) White. John was the husband of the late Ursula (Crawford ) and leaves behind a daughter , Johanna Synott, and two sons, Robert and wife Andrea , Raymond and wife Linda , 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Terryville High School and Pratt Institute of New York. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Corps as a pilot, attaining the rank of Major.

Mr. White returned home to work for Northeast Utilities for 41 Years. In his 30 years of retirement he continued his interest in flight with building and flying model airplanes becoming a life member of the Nutmeg R/C Flyers Club. There he was instrumental in founding of the Loosee-White flying field at the Thomaston Dam. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

Never one to sit still, his interests included photography, fly fishing, bee keeping, motorcycles and story telling among many, many others.

Memorial service will be held at Scotts Funeral Home in Terryville on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 1pm to 3pm. Followed by Military honors.
